Florida Man January 28th – Florida man eats steak challenge meal and dies of a stroke
On January 28th a Florida man attempted the local 90oz steak challenge, which included 10 9oz cuts of a variety of steaks, 6 large portions of fries, 2 sides of coleslaw and one large 2L pepsi. After completing the challenge the Florida man stayed back at the restaurant for a drink with the owners, courtesy of completing the challenge, where he complained that he began feeling faint.
The owners soon called for an ambulance and the man was taken to hospital, where he later passed away from a stroke. The coroner has released the reason of death being Rohypnol poisoning leading to a stroke. After a short investigation, it turned out that the restaurant laced the drink with astounding levels of Rohypnol to make the drinker pass out before completing the steak challenge, so that they would have to pay full price for the meal.
The arrest
Officers arrived at the restaurant late January 28th and closed the restaurant down. After obtaining a warrant they searched the premises and found 42 liters of pure Rohypnol and the owners, Betty and Juan Hernandez were taken into custody awaiting trial.
The sentence
Betty and John were both found guilty of secondary manslaughter and misuse of the illegal substance. They were sentenced to 17 years in the local penitentiary with bail set at $1,450,000 each. The Florida restaurant owner John paid his wifes bail, but committed himself to serve his full sentence.
